LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - One Lincoln high school has been hit hard by illness, and local health officials suspect swine flu is to blame.
Officials at Pius X High School say 180 students called in sick or were sent home on Tuesday. That's nearly 17 percent of the school's 1,065 students.
Tim Timmons with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department says his office is assuming the illness is swine flu, also known as the H1N1 strain.
Timmons says the department has reports of kids testing positive for influenza A. He says that because there are no other influenza viruses circulating in the community, it's likely swine flu.
Officials have reported three swine-flu deaths. The H1N1 flu is present statewide, but outbreaks have been reported in Omaha, Crete, Chadron and Loup City.

ReplyDeleteYeah, they've finally started lessening the swine hype since the regular flu kills 36,000 Americans per year and the N1H1 strain has hardly done anything. The reports are that it's even less severe than any other flu strain out there and, as usual, to take care with infants and elderly.
ReplyDeleteHere in Chadron they've told the college students if they suspect they have the flu, to just stay in their dorms/homes and do what you always do with the flu (hydrate, rest, etc.) unless it become an emergency.
Oh, and she really is a cutie pie!
Yeah, I've heard the same things as Shaye mentioned... hopefully that's all we have to deal with. But just in case, I think I'll pump my kiddos up with some vitamins...
